When it's quieter

In their own words cmzoo.org

“The Zoo has designated Quiet Zones to provide a calm and quiet area for visitors with sensory needs, indicated by signs in these locations.” “Quiet Zones have less activity and provide space to sit and regroup.”

“For guests with sensory needs, sensory bags are available to check out at the Zoo’s Admissions booths. Bags are free to check out.”

Our note The zoo doesn't say which days or times are quieter. Every visitor needs an advance timed ticket, babies included, and each time slot is limited, so you choose your arrival time ahead.

Our note On Dog Days (Fri Oct 30, Thu Nov 12, Fri Nov 20) visitors can bring their dogs all day. If dogs are hard for your kid, pick another day.

Our note The zoo is on a mountainside, from 6,714 feet at the gate to nearly 7,000 feet at the top. The zoo says to drink water, and the paths go uphill.

ROAR Connections, kids 6 to 12, 4:00 to 7:00 pm. “an evening program designed for children ages 6-12 with autism spectrum disorders, sensory processing disorders, developmental disabilities/delays or medical fragility.” October theme: World of Darkness (nocturnal animals), with a craft and an animal meet and greet. The zoo doesn't say what is changed for sensory needs. $30.75 per child, $25.75 members; one caregiver free; registration required.

Three things to know

  1. Free sensory bags at the Admissions booths: noise-reducing headphones, fidget tools and a communication card. They hold a photo ID until you bring the bag back. Weighted lap blankets can be checked out too.
  2. Two Quiet Zones with signs: the elephant demo area in Encounter Africa (when no demo is scheduled) and the top of the Old Gnarly play area, between The Loft and My Big Backyard.
  3. Free parking. Advance timed e-tickets are required for everyone, including kids 2 and under; no refunds or exchanges. Prices change by date (the zoo posts a pricing calendar).
More: re-entry, food, rentals, first aid

Named by the zoo on its accessibility page; it doesn't publish a noise scale.

More ways to get ready for the zoo

What to expect

Advance timed tickets for everyone, then free parking and the front gates. The zoo climbs a mountainside, from about 6,700 feet at the gate to nearly 7,000, so there are hills. Sensory bags with headphones are at the Admissions booths, and two Quiet Zones have signs. You can leave and come back the same day. Change anything.

Common questions

What if my child won't look at the schedule or story?

That is common at first. Leave it where the moment happens, point to one picture at a time, and keep it low-pressure. Many kids warm up to it after a few calm tries, in their own time.

Can I make this in Spanish?

Yes. Every tool and this page exist in Spanish, and the printed page comes out in the language you choose. Use the language switch at the top.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no signup, and we don’t keep what you type; anything you save stays on your device. Make it, print it, done.
