Getting ready forthe Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.
A science and history museum in Fort Worth's Cultural District with Sensory Time on the first Wednesday of select months, when lighting and sound are adjusted, plus a Calming Room, sensory backpacks, noise-canceling headphones to borrow and a communication board.
“On the first Wednesdays of select months, lighting and sound will be adjusted to accommodate Museum visitors needs from 3PM - 5PM.”
“The Calming Room is a space for those with sensory needs to relax and re-center during their visit.”
“Backpacks are first come, first served and are available for guests to check out at the ticket counter.”
The Calming Room may only be used by one family at a time, and you're encouraged to bring whatever you need into it, like fidget toys or headphones. Noise-canceling headphones are also available to borrow for guests who don't have their own.
Sensory Time is included with regular admission. The museum's Plan Your Visit page has a “Sign Up For Sensory Times” link.
The museum's communication board has frequently used and museum-specific words. Check out a laminated copy at guest services, or download it to a phone or tablet from the Plan Your Visit page.
Sensory Saturday is a free evening for families of individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities, with doors closed to the general public, lower light and sound, and attendance limited to 300 guests. Registration opens one month before the event date; watch the museum's Sensory Saturday page for the next one. Questions: rreed@fwmsh.org.
