Colorado's story on several floors, free for kids every day, free headphones at Admissions, and a quiet place the museum names: Lincoln Hills. Its own story warns that one theater is dark and loud. Here is the quiet way through it, in its own words.
History Colorado Center (now the Colorado History Museum)
1200 N Broadway, Denver 80203 · 10 am to 5 pm every day. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Closes at 3 pm on New Year's Eve (the FAQ also says Christmas Eve). Last entry: not stated.
At Low Sensory Mornings “The museum will be closed to the general public, attendance limited and sounds in the exhibits turned down.” “Admission is free and space is limited. RSVP is required.”
“Quiet spaces are available in the member's lounge on the fourth floor,” and “the nursing room in the northeast corner of the third floor.”
“If I need a quiet place, I can go to Lincoln Hills.”
Our note No Low Sensory Morning date in this window is on the museum's site; the only listing is “Sat, Sep 12” with no year, and the museum states no rule for how often they run. Another site lists Sat Nov 14 2026; the museum's own pages don't, so we left it out. Call the Reservations Coordinator at 303-866-2394 to ask.
Our note The museum doesn't say when it is quieter on regular days. The only free day in the window is Sat Nov 7 (Night at the Museums); hours not stated. We'd expect it to be fuller.
Our note The social story names Lincoln Hills as the quiet place; the accessibility page names the member's lounge and the nursing room. Ask at Admissions which is open that day.
Three things to know
Free noise-canceling headphones at the Admissions desk, first come, first served. No other sensory tools are listed.
Quiet spaces: the member's lounge on the 4th floor and the nursing room in the northeast corner of the 3rd floor. The social story adds Lincoln Hills.
Adults (19 and up) $20. Kids 18 and under free. Members free. Veterans $2 off. SNAP $1 per person with an EBT card at the front desk.
More: parking, lunch, lockers, first aid
Named by the museum's own social story; it publishes no noise scale
Louder, in the museum's words
Dust Bowl Theater (in Living West) (“dark and loud. It is just pretend, but I can leave if I want to.”)not stated
Restrooms (“The hand dryers are very loud.” “The toilets flush by themselves.”)not stated
Quieter

Parking: covered parking at the Art Garage, 1200 Lincoln St; daily fees apply and the museum does not validate. Not in the covered lot right next to the museum. With a disability placard or plate you can park at meters without paying.
Bring your own lunch: tables are on the 3rd floor or outside. No food or drink in the galleries. Café Rendezvous is just off the main lobby.
Lockers: small ones take a quarter (you get it back); large ones are checked out at the front desk with ID.
First aid: a kit in the Guest Services office on the ground floor. Ask at the front desk.
Strollers are allowed throughout. Wheelchairs and one motorized scooter at Admissions, ID required. Elevators are on the north side.
Staff wear lanyards and carry radios.
The museum's own “A Social Story for Visitors” (English) is linked from its accessibility page. This page links to it rather than replacing it.
Same museum, new name: it is now called the Colorado History Museum, but the building sign still says History Colorado.
What the museum doesn't say
not stated any Low Sensory Morning date in this window, or what time they start
not stated a re-entry rule
not stated a last-entry time
not stated bag or backpack rules
not stated a drop-off spot
not stated how a non-member gets into the member's lounge
Park in a garage on Lincoln St or at a meter, then walk in to the Admissions desk. Kids 18 and under are free. Ask for free noise-canceling headphones. Then exhibits on several floors, with elevators on the north side. The Dust Bowl Theater is dark and loud, and the hand dryers are very loud; the museum says so itself. Lunch from home is fine at the 3rd floor tables. Change anything.
One tip from a dad who's been there
Read the museum's own social story the night before; it names the dark, loud theater and the loud hand dryers so nothing is a surprise. At Admissions, ask which quiet space is open that day before you start. Leaving early still counts as a museum day.
Common questions
What if my child won't look at the schedule or story?
That is common at first. Leave it where the moment happens, point to one picture at a time, and keep it low-pressure. Many kids warm up to it after a few calm tries, in their own time.
Can I make this in Spanish?
Yes. Every tool and this page exist in Spanish, and the printed page comes out in the language you choose. Use the language switch at the top.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no signup, and we don’t keep what you type; anything you save stays on your device. Make it, print it, done.
