When it's quieter

In their own words hudsongardens.org

“We offer a designated Sensory-Friendly Night on Dec. 2” “This night is intended to be calmer for those with sensory sensitivities, autism, PTSD, & more, lower music volume, and capped attendance.” “Please note that this is not a low-sensory event.”

“Use the Denver Seminary entrance (W. Weaver Ave.) to enter for ADA Parking or Drop-Off.” “The entrances, trails, exits, and restrooms are ADA accessible.”

Our note The Sensory-Friendly Night is Wed Dec 2, 5 to 9 pm. The Gardens turns the music down and caps the crowd, but doesn't say the lights change, and is upfront that it's “not a low-sensory event.” Pack headphones and sunglasses.

Our note There's no re-entry, so a trip back to the car ends the night. The walk through the gardens is about 0.65 miles.

What to expect

Parking is free; accessible parking and drop-off use the Denver Seminary entrance on W. Weaver Ave. Tickets are good any time during event hours on your day, but there is no re-entry. The walk is about 0.65 miles. On the Dec 2 Sensory-Friendly Night the music is lower and the crowd is capped, but the Gardens says it is not a low-sensory event, so bring headphones and sunglasses. Change anything.

One tip before you go

Eat first and use the bathroom before you leave the car, since there is no re-entry. Pack your own headphones and sunglasses; the Gardens recommends them even on the sensory night. Leaving before the meltdown is good parenting, not giving up.

Common questions

What if my child won't look at the schedule or story?

That is common at first. Leave it where the moment happens, point to one picture at a time, and keep it low-pressure. Many kids warm up to it after a few calm tries, in their own time.
