Taking medicine.

Medicine helps the body feel better or stay healthy. A calm routine, and knowing exactly what to expect, makes it easier to swallow.

More ways to build the routine

What to expect

Medicine can be a pill, a chewable, or a liquid. The taste, the texture, or the idea can all be the hard part, not just swallowing. A drink to chase it, letting the child hold the cup, and a steady same-time routine all help. If pills are hard, ask the pharmacist about liquid or chewable versions. You know your kid.

One tip from a dad who's been there

Practice swallowing with a tiny candy sprinkle or a mini candy first, so the skill is learned when nothing is on the line. Keep medicine at the same moment each day so it rides along with a routine that already exists.

Common questions

What if my child won't look at the schedule or story?

That is common at first. Leave it where the moment happens, point to one picture at a time, and keep it low-pressure. Many kids warm up to it after a few calm tries, in their own time.
