When I shut down.

Sometimes overwhelm looks quiet, not loud. Going still and wordless is not ignoring you; it is a body protecting itself.

What to expect

A shutdown is a meltdown turned inward: the child goes quiet, still, and hard to reach, and words may disappear. It is not defiance or sulking. Pushing for answers makes it worse. Calm, low-demand presence and time help most. You know your kid.

One tip from a dad who's been there

Lower your voice and your expectations, and stop asking questions. Sit nearby, offer a card or a yes-no choice instead of open questions, and let quiet be okay until the words come back.

Common questions

What if my child won't look at the schedule or story?

That is common at first. Leave it where the moment happens, point to one picture at a time, and keep it low-pressure. Many kids warm up to it after a few calm tries, in their own time.
