Having a playdate.

Another kid in your space, sharing your things, playing their way sometimes. Fun, and a lot of social work at once.

Social story

A Playdate

Today a friend is coming over to play.

We can play together and pick things we both like.

Sometimes my friend wants a turn with my toys. Taking turns is part of playing together.

If I need a quiet break, I can take one. My friend will still be here.

Playing with a friend can be fun, even when it is also a lot.

When it is time, we say goodbye. My friend can come again another day.

What to expect

Playdates ask for a lot at once: sharing space and toys, going along with someone else's ideas, handling a goodbye. Naming that turns happen and that it's okay to take a break makes the visit doable.

One tip from a dad who's been there

Keep first playdates short and put away the few toys that are hardest to share. Tell your child it's okay to take a quiet break in their room if it gets to be too much.

Common questions

What if the playdate falls apart after twenty minutes?

Then twenty minutes was the right length. End on the good part and let the next one be twenty-five. Short and successful beats long and tearful every time.
