Getting ready for a Feel the Beat dance class.

An adaptive dance nonprofit with studios in Lakewood, Westminster and Centennial. Every class is taught in ASL and English on a floor that turns music into vibration, with noise-cancelling headphones and light-sensitivity glasses on hand. The first class is free.

What the studio offers, in its words

“At Feel the Beat, all of our classes are adaptive”

“We also have noise-cancelling headphones and light-sensitivity glasses on hand, since lighting isn't always adjustable depending on the space and other students' needs.”

“Our instructors focus on creating an environment of choice, body autonomy, and empowerment, giving each student a voice in their dance journey.”

  • Classes are taught in spoken English and ASL, with visual instruction, communication cards and hands-on guidance as needed. 1:1 support is available; ask before you go so they can staff the class.
  • Movers classes are play-based, with dance games, for new dancers. Groovers classes work on technique and choreography. Teens who follow group instruction on their own can join adult classes; teens who need more individual support are better suited to a youth class. Low Sensory Jazz, for teens and adults, is Saturdays noon to 12:45 pm at Whitlock.

Three things to know

  1. Register in the class portal before every class, even the free first one. The portal needs a card on file, but you're only charged for classes you attend or don't cancel.
  2. Grown-ups don't watch from inside the room. Wait outside, watch through the window, or dance along after signing a waiver and telling the studio beforehand.
  3. The floor vibrates with the music, by design.

Louder, in the studio's words

The vibrotactile dance floor (turns music into “gentle, full-body vibration”; the studio says that if vibration is uncomfortable, its classes likely won't feel good)not stated

Quieter

  • Youth classes, Lakewood (Whitlock Recreation Center): Creative Dance (Movers) Mondays 4:15 to 5 pm and Saturdays 1 to 1:45 pm; Hip Hop Fusion (Groovers) Wednesdays 5 to 5:45 pm.
  • Youth classes, Centennial (Performance Shift): Creative Dance (Movers) Thursdays 5 to 5:45 pm. Westminster (Colorado Movement Lab): Creative Dance (Movers) Saturdays 1:15 to 2 pm.
  • The first class is free. After that: $22 a class, or an 8-class pack ($160) or 16-class pack ($256), each for one dancer. Scholarships are available for any student who needs one.
  • Wear clothes that move easily, not jeans. The Whitlock floor can be slippery, so grippy socks or shoes help; at Colorado Movement Lab, no street shoes in the studio. No gum or food in class.
  • Group classes need 24 hours' notice to cancel, or a fee may apply. Running late? Call or text (303) 816-8683.
  • Ages 3 and up.
