Getting an MRI.

A big machine that takes pictures inside the body. It is loud and you hold very still, so knowing the sounds first helps a lot.

What to expect

An MRI takes pictures with a big machine and no needles. The main jobs are lying still and handling loud knocking and buzzing sounds. Headphones, music, or a movie usually help. Ask about a practice tube or a weighted blanket. Some kids get medicine to sleep through it; the team can talk that through. You know your kid.

One tip from a dad who's been there

Play MRI sounds on your phone at home a few times first, so the noise is familiar, not a shock. Ask if they have an MRI-safe comfort item and whether a parent can stay in the room.

Common questions

What if my child won't look at the schedule or story?

That is common at first. Leave it where the moment happens, point to one picture at a time, and keep it low-pressure. Many kids warm up to it after a few calm tries, in their own time.
