If I get lost, I find a helper.

More ways to practice the plan

What to expect

The safest plan is simple and practiced: stop, stay put, and find a safe helper rather than wander. Safe helpers are easy to name ahead of time: a worker with a name tag, a person at a register, or another parent with kids. Teach the exact words to say. Practice it as a calm game, not a scare. You know your kid.

One tip from a dad who's been there

Put a card in your kid's pocket or shoe with your name and phone number, and take a photo of them each morning you go somewhere busy, so you have exactly what they are wearing. Practice the plan at the store when nothing is wrong.

Common questions

What if my child won't look at the schedule or story?

That is common at first. Leave it where the moment happens, point to one picture at a time, and keep it low-pressure. Many kids warm up to it after a few calm tries, in their own time.
