Getting ready forthe Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center.
An indoor hot springs pool run by the City of Salida, with a warm leisure pool that has a zero-entry side, a cooler lap pool, and private soaking pools you can book. Indoors means no cold walk between pools.
Know before you go. The aquatic center doesn't list sensory supports. Here's what it does say about the water, the breaks and the rules.
The lap pool is kept at “82-84 degrees,” while “the smaller Leisure Pool offers a cozy 97-100 degrees.” cityofsalida.com
Space
“an ADA-compliant lift for easy entry into both pools, step entries with handrails for your comfort, and a zero-entry area into the leisure pool.” cityofsalida.com
Waits
“5-10 minute Safety Breaks take place each afternoon and evening, where all guests must exit the pools.” cityofsalida.com
Rules
Kids who can't pass the swim test (25 meters without stopping) “must stay within arms reach of an adult in the water at all times,” with “one adult per three non-swimmers in the water.” cityofsalida.com
Crowds
“Private soaking pools are also available for a more intimate experience.” cityofsalida.com
Everyone showers with soap before getting in. The leisure pool is 97 to 100 degrees and has a zero-entry area; the lap pool is 82 to 84. A few times each afternoon and evening, lifeguards call a 5 to 10 minute safety break and everyone gets out. Kids who can't swim 25 meters stay within arm's reach of an adult in the water. Change anything.
Common questions
What if my child won't look at the schedule or story?
That is common at first. Leave it where the moment happens, point to one picture at a time, and keep it low-pressure. Many kids warm up to it after a few calm tries, in their own time.
