Getting ready forPhoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).
PHX has a Sensory Room inside the Compassion Corner chapel in Terminal 4, Level 3, near the B elevators. Call the number on the door to get in, 8 am to 8 pm Sunday to Friday and 8 am to 4 pm Saturday.
“Children or adults with an intellectual or developmental disability may visit the Sensory Room for a respite from the sensory overload that they might experience when in the airport environment.”
With a Compassion Cacti lanyard, “airport employees know that the passenger may need extra assistance or a little more time at the check-in counter, security checkpoint and other areas.”
The Sensory Room is inside the all-faiths chapel, which people also use to worship or pray, so others may be in the chapel when you arrive.
PHX uses its own Compassion Cacti lanyard, not the Sunflower lanyard, and it's only recognized at PHX.
Ask at an information counter whether the room is before or after security, then add a security step before or after the Sensory Room in your plan.
The room has tables, chairs, puzzles and coloring books.
Compassion Cacti lanyards: request online at skyharbor.com within three months of your trip. Staff review it in 5 to 7 business days, then you pick it up at the Compassion Corner Office with a photo ID.
The lanyard doesn't change TSA PreCheck, CLEAR, early boarding or wheelchair help, and doesn't skip security.
Navigator Support Guides are airport volunteers who help guide you. They're not escorts, and PHX says it's a free program. Make an appointment ahead.
